Nuestra Señora de la Santa Muerte, often called Santa Muerte, is a Mexican folk-Catholic saint and female deity personifying death. Rooted in Aztec death goddess traditions and blended with Catholic imagery, she is depicted as a robed skeleton holding a scythe, globe, or other symbols. Associated with healing, protection, prosperity, and safe passage to the afterlife, she has millions of devotees in Mexico, Central America, and the U.S. Her inclusive appeal attracts marginalized groups, including the poor, LGBTQ+, and those excluded from mainstream religion. While condemned by the Catholic Church for her ties to criminality, she remains central to one of the fastest-growing religious movements in the Americas.
